OBSIDIAN: Episode 1
May 31, 2008
Welcome to the debut episode of J.C. Hutchins’ 7th Son: OBSIDIAN, the world’s first podcast short story anthology based in an existing fictional universe. The universe is, of course, Hutchins’ 7th Son Podcast Novel Trilogy.
Nearly 100 people have contributed to the OBSIDIAN experience. Tales from bestselling novelists, A-List podcast storytellers and 7th Son fans from around the globe will be featured in this anthology over the next 10 weeks. At least three episodes of content will be released each week, so prepare for full immersion into the OBSIDIAN blackout experience.
In the weeks ahead, you’ll hear stories from these podcast entertainers: Michael A. Stackpole, Scott Sigler, Mur Lafferty, Matt Wallace, Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff, Christiana Ellis, Evo Terra, Dan Klass, Wichita Rutherford, TD-0013, George Hrab, Soccergirl, and the cast of The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd.
Today’s episode features the first half of the short story Miles To Go Before I Sleep, written and narrated by Tee Morris. Learn more about Tee’s work — and send him an appreciative email! — at TeeMorris.com.
There’s huge news in J.C.’s “talky talk” intro and outro segments, including:
- The big reveal about J.C.’s next novel, affectionately nicknamed CODE PHANTOM
- The world premiere of Celldweller’s instrumental version of “Birthright”
- How you can download a full album of Celldweller songs — including the full version of “Birthright” — for free at FixtOnline.com/FreeDownloads
- J.C.’s appearance on producer Shawn Bishop’s podcast, Behind The Lines #14
- The debut of J.C.’s text story, 7th Son: Runner, available as a mobile phone exclusive
Feedback about OBSIDIAN is welcome and appreciated! Send J.C. an email, leave a comment below, or call the Clone Line at 206-984-2566 (CLONE).

took ya long enough
Yes. It has been unleashed. I’m opening it like a kid on Christmas.
Fanfrackingtastic!!!
Tee definately brought his A game to the 7th Son Universe. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the stories from the blackout unfold, and to EXPERIENCE Code Phantom (won’t spoiler the real title for those that haven’t listened yet) when it is released. You continue to outdo yourself, J.C.
[...] Hutchins has released the first episode of his shared-world short story anthology 7th Son: Obsidian. In addition to the first story (”Miles to Go Before I Sleep,” a hell of a leadoff by [...]
Well worth the wait, Hutch. I was looking forward to Code Phantom sight unseen — now that you’ve given us a glimpse, I’m completely stoked.
Tee, nicely done. Way to kick things off in style.
Wow! What a way to start things! The best part is I know that Mr. Morris can rock. And he’s got me chomping at the earbuds for more. Well worth the long wait.
Whoo – Go Hutch
Writing this short story was a real killer on two fronts: This is my first try at the Thriller genre, and this was for Hutch. We joke, we trash talk, and we challenge each other in the podcast fiction arena, but I have been a fan of 7th Son from the beginning. I didn’t want to let the Clones down, and I also wanted to meet Hutch’s expectations. From the early feedback, it appears I did both.
Thank you all for the kind words, support, criticisms, and investment of time. I hope, when “Miles To Go…” concludes, it is looked upon as time well spent.
And thank you, Hutch. It was a real delight getting a chance to explore your world…and to write a short story that features the trademark transition we all know from your trilogy. :^)
Tee, you did a fantastic job with this story. I can’t wait to hear part two.
Obsidian is off to a fantastic start!
WOO HOO!!!! Yeah!!!!
You know…CODE PHANTOM explains why Hutch got the Red Seal.
And I’ve probably owed Tee a review/letter for a while. So expect one soon, cap’n.
[...] wait to hear what they came up with. Right now, Obsidian has launched with Tee Morris’ story, Miles To Go Before I Sleep. Fans of Hutchins will also appreciate the big reveal of what his second novel, nicknamed CODE [...]
